What Is Website Traffic?
Having the awareness of the 3 types to increase website traffic will dramatically change the way you strategize for traffic. It will help you to think better and plan a better strategy when driving traffic to your website or home on the internet.
Hypothetically speaking if you owned a store in a specific location your main objective would be to bring people to your store. As a store owner, you will see people coming into the store, browsing the store, buying from the store, and or walking out of the store. That's traffic.
This goes for those with an online store. Your website requires traffic. Simply put that means visitors coming to your website that browse, buy and or leave your website. Your goal is potential customers from that traffic.
So let's be aware that there are 3 types of website traffic.
Traffic You Control, Traffic You Don't Control, And Traffic You Own.
Let's simplify how to think about traffic, especially these 3 types of traffic, so you can put together a traffic strategy.
The best way to go about this is to build traffic you OWN by investing time and money into traffic you CONTROL and traffic you DON’T CONTROL.
Facebook Ads, Google Ads, Banner Ads, Native Ads, Email Ads (solo ads etc) When you advertise on platforms like Google Ads or Facebook Ads this is what you call paid advertising.
This puts you in control of your own marketing budget. You control when you want to run an ad, to who your target market is, and for how long alongside the platform advertising best practices rules, and regulations. This way your ads will send traffic to your website. This puts you in control of the traffic being able to tell that traffic exactly where you want it to go. This can deliver short-term profits for you, but for how long, who knows? Depending on what sort of ad you have chosen, whether it be CPA or CPC just know that bidding for keywords can become expensive so plan carefully.
The whole point of this chosen strategy is the traffic you control will run through a customized funnel that you have designed for them to follow a pathway to go where you want them to go. This way you get the traffic you control and turn them into traffic you own.
Social Media - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Linkedin, Google, or any form of traffic that you get for free - SEO, Guest Blog Traffic, Youtube - any type of traffic that just shows up.
This is the sort of traffic I tend to send back to my blog with the intention of getting them on my list then they become traffic I own.
When it comes to traffic you don't control but can be influenced. Influenced traffic on social media platforms is where you can’t control people to click the “Like” button on Facebook or even follow you on Twitter, and then visit your website and become your customer.
In saying that you can leverage the social media platforms, where you can build your influence and get followers, and translate some of that influence into customers.
Never class those followers as your business list and never rely on social media platforms that can be here today and gone tomorrow. The algorithms can change the rules overnight and sometimes not to your advantage.
It is recommended that you start with influenced traffic as 1 of 3 levels of traffic because it’s free or low-cost. Being a social media influencer can lead to a huge following but be aware you are not in control purely because of the risks on social media platforms.
Email List, Subscribers & Followers.
As a business owner online one of your business assets is your email list, subscribers, and followers.
The traffic you own gives you the capability to send out an email newsletter to your list. You have that control over the time and date you want to send it. If you have a massive list that's highly responsive you won't necessarily need to advertise at all - knowing you already have all the traffic you need to sustain your business.
Having traffic you own doesn't mean you have instant buyers. They are your future buyers. It takes time for your list to get to know like and trust you.
The key factor here is do not send out to them buy buy buy. Rather build a relationship and warm them up to eventually ascending into becoming a buyer.
Having your own YouTube channel or Blog or Hub, that traffic is your own traffic. These are the very traffic that is grateful for the value you provide them that subscribe and follow which builds your business list.
Knowing all 3 types to increase website traffic will make a difference to your online business.
Personally, I highly recommend all 3 types but do take notice of the 3rd type being the most valuable - Traffic You Own. Long-term security is what you are after here. The relationship you cultivate with your prospects and customers over the long term is definitely the No. 1 focus to be able to build and nurture traffic to traffic you own.
