Firstly What Is Website Traffic?

Understanding the three different types of website traffic can significantly transform how you approach your traffic strategy. This awareness will enable you to develop more effective plans for driving visitors to your website or online presence.

Imagine you own a physical store in a particular location. Your primary goal would be to attract customers to your store. As a store owner, you would observe people entering the store, browsing the merchandise, making purchases, and sometimes leaving without buying anything.

This flow of people is analogous to traffic in the online world.

For anyone running an online store, driving traffic to your website is crucial. Essentially, traffic means visitors coming to your site, whether they browse, make a purchase, or simply leave. Your ultimate goal is to attract potential customers through this traffic.

It's important to understand that there are three types of website traffic: Traffic You Control, Traffic You Don't Control, and Traffic You Own.

To create an effective traffic strategy, think about these three types of traffic in simpler terms. Focus on building traffic you OWN by investing time and resources into both traffic you CONTROL and traffic you DON’T CONTROL. This approach will help you develop a comprehensive strategy to grow your online presence.

1. TRAFFIC YOU CONTROL

This type of traffic comes from paid advertising methods such as Facebook Ads, Google Ads, Banner Ads, Native Ads, and Email Ads (like solo ads). When you use these platforms, you’re essentially purchasing ad space, which allows you to manage your marketing budget directly.

With paid advertising, you have full control over when your ads run, who sees them, and for how long, all while adhering to the platform’s best practices and regulations. This control means you can direct traffic exactly where you want it to go, leading to immediate, though potentially short-lived, results. Keep in mind that costs can add up quickly, especially with competitive bidding on keywords, so budgeting carefully is essential.

The goal of this strategy is to channel the traffic you control through a tailored funnel you’ve created, guiding them precisely where you want them to go. By doing this, you can convert this controlled traffic into traffic you own.

2. TRAFFIC YOU DON'T CONTROL

This type of traffic comes from sources that you can't directly manage, such as social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, LinkedIn), SEO, guest blog posts, or YouTube. Essentially, this is free or organic traffic that appears without direct payment for placement.

While you can't dictate who interacts with your content or follows you, you can influence this traffic. For instance, you might use social media to drive visitors to your blog with the goal of converting them into subscribers or customers. Once they join your list, they become part of the traffic you own.

Social media allows you to build influence and attract followers, which can eventually lead to conversions. However, be cautious: followers on social media aren't the same as customers, and platforms can change their algorithms or disappear, potentially affecting your reach and engagement.

Starting with influenced traffic can be beneficial due to its low cost or no cost. Building a strong social media presence can help, but remember, you don’t fully control this traffic and should be prepared for the inherent risks associated with social media dynamics.

3. TRAFFIC YOU OWN

This category includes assets such as your email list, subscribers, and followers. These are valuable because they represent a direct connection to your audience that you fully control.

With traffic you own, you can send out newsletters or promotional emails whenever you choose. If your list is substantial and highly engaged, you might find you don’t need to rely on paid advertising at all, as you already have a reliable stream of traffic to support your business.

However, it’s important to remember that having an email list or a following doesn’t automatically translate to immediate sales. These individuals are potential future customers, and building their trust takes time. Avoid bombarding them with constant sales pitches. Instead, focus on nurturing relationships and providing value to gradually convert them into buyers.

Similarly, owning your own YouTube channel, blog, or hub means you have control over the content and the audience that engages with it. These platforms allow you to build a loyal following that appreciates the value you provide and contributes to growing your business list.

Understanding and leveraging all three types of traffic—Traffic You Control, Traffic You Don’t Control, and Traffic You Own—can profoundly impact your online business. While all three are important, Traffic You Own is the most valuable for long-term stability. Cultivating and nurturing these relationships is crucial for sustained success.

Aim high and build your online presence with a focus on mastering traffic and conversions. Success in online business requires a commitment to fully understanding and utilizing all traffic sources, with a particular emphasis on growing and maintaining the traffic you own.
